Short answer: Yes!
Anthropic has 4 certs as of now. I’ve cleared all 4. I’ve trained 100s of folks to clear them, so far. I’ve answered a lot of questions about them. So it’s about time I compiled simple info about them to help others:
- Are they worth pursuing?
- Which one should you go after?
- How should you prepare?
What are these certs about?
As depicted in the above image, Anthropic has launched 2 difficulty levels and 3 role-specific tracks for the 4 certs.
There is the Foundations level – which is the “easy” level. That is followed by the Professional level. The Professional level is supposed to be harder than the Foundations. Emphasis on “supposed to be”. I’ll come back to this later.
There are 3 role-specific tracks
- Associate – for the tech-adjacent role (e.g. Business Analyst, Project Manager, etc)
- Developer – My definition: someone who can write code without having to rely on AI (no vibe coders were injured here, let’s move on)
- Architect – for folks who design/architect AI systems but need not be hands-on coders
You can register for these certs (IFF your employer is an Anthropic partner) here. You can sit for the exam either in online-proctored mode OR physical test center mode.
Why should you bother?
Not everyone can clear these certs. So if you clear them, that’s saying something. These certs test your comprehension of the Claude ecosystem + overall Agentic AI. The prep courses on the Anthropic website are top notch. Because I’ve had the privilege of building in this GenAI space for the last 4 years, I was already familiar with most of the concepts. Yet, going through the learning material was useful for me. It gave me a lot of clarity. Whether you are a beginner in AI or an expert, please do go through these prep courses. The knowledge gain would be immense. The cert wins are simply a positive by-product. The learning and mental-growth – those are the real wins.
Which one to go for first
- If you are new to AI – simply go for the Associate Foundations first.
- If you have already been using Claude Code and/or Claude API – go for the Developer Foundations exam.
- If you have been designing AI solutions – go for the Architect Professional exam first. Then go for the Architect Foundations. (Wait what??) Yes, you read that right. In my opinion (and others that I’ve spoken with) – the Architect Foundations is a bit more difficult that the Architect Professional exam.
How to prepare
Here are some tips.
- Pick ONE cert. Focus on it.
- Schedule the exam.
- Go through the official study guide.
- Stop looking for motivation to arrive. Schedule the exam. Motivation will find you.
- Go through the official prep course. NO need to go through any other courses. (Sorry, Udemy!)
- Use Claude as much as possible. But don’t worry if you don’t have a paid license. As long as you understand the concepts, you can still ace the exams.
- Do some practice with mock exams. For this you can refer Udemy. (Whew! I’m back in their good books now.)
- Schedule the exam. (Did I say this already?)
- Read the official Anthropic documentation for sections in which you didn’t do that great in the mock exams.
- Ace the exam.
